How To Start My Own Catering Company

How To Start My Own Catering Company – For this sector spotlight we hear from Josie, who studied catering at college and then started her own cake company in March 2020 just before the country went into lockdown!

The best part of my job is baking and decorating all the cakes and treats for my customers. The workload depends on demand, but this could produce up to 15 celebration cakes a week and then dozens of sweet treats. I make brownies, blondies, cookies, cookies, cakes, milkshakes, old-school cakes, cupcakes, mini donuts, geo hearts, and babies! Pretty much any sweet treat you want, I make!

However, making all of these requires a lot of ingredients, so I also do a lot of restocking and buying ingredients. Some of these cakes and treats also need delivery so that is part of my job! And you can’t forget cleaning and making sure my work area is tidy!

Then with my own business comes a lot of admin work and emails, so I spend quite a bit of time doing that as well as my books (which are all my finances). In addition, I run my own social media pages (@_josiescakeco_) which can be the most frustrating part of my job because I can cut across the market and the algorithm is constantly changing! Still, my Instagram page has grown to over 2,750 followers! And finally, I also do business development and I like to spend time thinking of new ideas for my business.

I’ve always had a passion for cooking and baking, and I knew from high school that’s what I wanted to go into.

After my GCSEs I went and studied catering at college and won the catering student of the year award which allowed me to spend a month at the award winning Michelin star restaurant, Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons in Oxfordshire owned by Raymond Blanc to work . What an amazing opportunity it was!

After I finished my catering course, I also attended Camp America where I was a cupcake specialist teaching kids how to bake, pipe, handle fondant, and food health and safety.

When I returned from camp, I finished my month with Raymond Blanc and then began my career as a chef.

It was in March 2020 that I took the plunge and started my own business, just before the lockdown. I did this part-time at first in addition to working as a chef, but then went full-time for a few months.

I have now owned my own business for two and a half years. And recently I was able to go back and work in the patisserie section of Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons, which was great for finding out more about flavor combinations and techniques! Which helps me in my business development!

However, if this is true, it does not make starting your own business any easier, it requires careful planning and preparation. While I’ve been working on my first cake pop order and selecting supplies for my studio in my own home, here are 10 things I wish I knew before I started my bakery.

Recipe testing and development are essential steps before launching a food business. Testing ensures that the recipe is consistent, reliable and meets quality standards. It also helps identify any potential issues and allows adjustments to be made to the recipe.

By taking the time to test and develop your recipe, you can create a product that stands out in the market and builds customer loyalty. It can also save you time and money in the long run by preventing costly mistakes and ensuring your product meets regulatory requirements.

In addition, it is also good to understand that high-quality ingredients and equipment are crucial to achieve the best possible results in baking. High-quality ingredients can enhance the taste and texture of a product, while subpar ingredients can negatively affect the final product. So, be really careful when choosing ingredients!

Similarly, the use of high-quality equipment can improve the efficiency and precision of cooking or baking, leading to better results. Investing in high-quality ingredients and equipment can also save you money in the long run, as they last longer and require replacement less often.

From this you can now start to develop a menu of baked goods that you offer and then determine their prices. If your products are customized and do not have a fixed rate, then you need to have a base price to guide you if you need to add additional costs depending on the complexity of the design.

First, it helps you set clear goals and objectives for your business that can be used to guide decision-making and measure progress.

Ultimately, it helps you manage finances effectively, ensuring you have the necessary resources to support business operations and achieve long-term growth.

Remember to include details and research to support your plan, and adjust it over time.

Even if you are in the initial phase of your business, when you start offering your food products to other people, you are already liable for all legal concerns. So, it is important to obtain the necessary licenses and permits to operate your business legally. You also need to choose a name for your business and then register it with the appropriate government agencies.

These licenses are crucial to ensuring that the food we consume is safe and free of harmful contaminants. These will help enforce health and safety standards, reduce the risk of foodborne illness and protect consumers from potential harm.

Failure to comply with these regulations and obtain the necessary licenses may result in legal consequences and damage to the reputation of a business.

Your own baking room, which complies with health and safety regulations, will help you to maintain a clean and organized environment, minimize the risk of contamination and ensure that you comply with legal requirements. It also helps you to be more efficient and productive in your work.

This is perhaps one of the most important aspects of building a business in any industry. Getting these details is advantageous in creating products or services that resonate with them and effectively communicate your brand message.
